Today is the inauguration of the new Sra Emm BioEnergy power plant in Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia. Arbonaut partnered with the IED Group to study the environmentally, socially and economically sustainable wood procurement chains for supporting the power plant. Developing the long-term supply chains will not only prevent deforestation, but also provide employment for local people.

Finnpartnership recently published an article about Arbonaut as a part of their Success Stories -series. In the article our CEO Tuomo Kauranne and Head of Unit Jarno Hämäläinen tell about our REDD+ and Sustainable Forestry activities; how it all began and what does it take to succeed in foreign markets.

ArboTimber, Arbonaut’s newest tool for efficient forestry operations, was released today. ArboTimber is a forest information search engine, which can be used for finding timber according to user-specific criteria. In addition, the search engine provides information on harvestability and estimations of harvesting expenses for demanded stands.

Currently, ArboTimber is available only in Finland. The programme has some 7 million hectares and 3,7 million forest stands already accessible, and more will follow later this year.

Arbonaut took part in the Forest Data Business Models -project, lead by Finnish Forest Centre, where our focus was on assessing forest fire risk utilizing LiDAR data. The results of the project can be seen from the video, released at the end of the initiative, in which our Forest Fire Specialist Alejandro Barrios tells more about the work we do for forest fire management here at Arbonaut.

Arbonaut’s experts were present in the UN Climate Change Conference COP23 in Bonn, Germany, as the National REDD+ Strategy for Uganda was formally launched during the conference. Congratulations also for Ghana and Nigeria for launching their respective REDD+ Strategies during the event!

Our NCF- project in Nepal got in to the national newspaper this week. The Nagarik National Daily wrote, how Arbonaut has conducted Vulnerability Assessment for Nepalgunj Sub Metropolitan City using GIS. The study aims to support the long-term strategic planning of flood control in the city.
