Milestones

1994: Arbonaut is incorporated as Arboreal Ltd.

1997: Arboreal introduces the first automatic single-tree forest inventory method in the world: Arboreal FIT.

1999: The first forest inventory trials based on airborne laser scanning happen with Arboreal FIT.

1999: Arboreal, Benefon and Geodata introduce the first GPS-enabled GSM phone at Telecom 99 in Geneva.

2000: Arboreal receives a major venture round for mobile location services from 3i Finland, Sitra, and Karinvest, and becomes Arbonaut.


2001: Arboreal FIT brought to the U.S. market by Arbonaut partner Falcon Informatics.

2002: Arbonaut launches a forest information portal for UPM.

2002: Arbonaut receives the EUROLEADER Award from EBN and British Telecom as the most innovative small enterprise in Europe among 900 contestants.

2002: Arbonaut receives a "Tuottava Idea" innovation award for Arboreal FIT.

2003: Arbonaut delivers the first mobile field terminal application for the Finnish Forest and Park Service (Metsähallitus). The application soon has 400 users.

2005: Arbonaut introduces ArboLIDAR, a new area based forest inventory method using airborne laser scanning.

2006: Posiva Oy hires Arbonaut to build a toolset for simulating nuclear waste disposal in bedrock.

2007: Arbonaut partners with Utility Risk Management Corporation (URMC) to deliver highly accurate vegetation management services for utilities.

2009: Arbonaut sets up offices in Helsinki and in Stowe, Vermont, USA.

2009: Using a combination of field measurements, LiDAR, and optical satellite imagery, Arbonaut, together with Finnmap and Indufor, carries out a successful assessment of forest carbon in Laos for REDD (UN program for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation).
